Creatures don't attack other creatures. It is more like "[...]to all creatures blocking or blocked by[...]".
it should be " when this creature blocks or becomes blocked it may deal damage equal to its power to all creatures blocking or blocked by this creature instead of assigning damage as normal." this prevents it also dealin its own power a second time like double strike plus wipe all at once and prevents immensely clunky and overpowered trample chains. eg in a red green deck taunting elf + rancour + blanchwood armour(3 Forests) + illogical aim vs 4 1/1 is game already turn 4 turn 3 potentially against 5 1 toughness creatures and having a llanowar elf or elvish mystic or birds of paradise etc. some form of ramp. and with land finding this combo is insane plus you can pair cross strike with other ways to taunt to create trample machines capable of unstoppable might which is why damage can't be assigned normally the afformentioned combo makes taunting elf, Yes, taunting elf a 0/1 a viable win condition turn 4 possibly turn 3 without that clause against tokens, white weenie and any other form of small creature swarm tactics.
