So, we know the usual EDH free-for-all can get a little stale after a while. Why not mix it up with cards that can grant you special objectives or open up more diplomatic drives?

Based off the Servant classes in Fate/Stay Night, the Identities are cards you don't cast - they are in your command zone, face-down unless stated otherwise, and grant you a secret objective to accomplish. Some involve merely surviving. Others force you to seek out and kill players with your own hands.

Before the game begins, players are dealt their identities at random. There will always be a Ruler, Saber, and an Assassin. All other identities are included at random. Everyone will reveal their identity when the game ends for any reason, like someone achieving a card's win condition or accomplishing their identity's objective. This is how identities like Lancer and Rider win - by having the game end without them dying. It is possible for multiple players to win the game at the same time.

The identities merely add alternative objectives you can achieve. You can still win the game the usual way by eliminating everyone else.

I can imagine how the game would go on people trying to find the assasin and the assasin trying to kill the ruler that seem really fun to me.

while I could definitely see this being a fun format obviously the fate/stay night thing wouldn't be applicable in a final product if it was ever actually formalised. Still this idea has lots of merits and I could see this forming its own sort of format somewhere.

Updates after playtesting:

  • Ruler and Saber gain small bonuses for killing those out for the Ruler's blood, to give them incentive to be more proactive.
  • Saber can turn face-up at will to take the bullet for the Ruler for one turn. Life loss can still bypass this.
  • Civilian can now kill other players, but only while face-down. He can turn face-up to prevent all damage for the turn, but as a cost he no longer can kill. Damage prevention breakers like Malignus or Skullcrack can bypass this.
  • Civilian no longer has a time limit so that players cannot collude to kill off anyone if they know the time limit exists. Also, it's harder to track.
  • Lancer and Archer bestow their killers with a free (but public) tutor on death. This makes their survival hard and encourages the Archer to work faster in assassination.
  • Caster's Ruler-usurping ability has been simplified.
