Well actually, as a sytax etremist, I'll explain this- oh and before i explain this, Commandant: your card would die before it can do anything, without any chance of adding 1/1 counters- try making it become a 0/1?
Now with the deal damage card, the way Exmortis implies this: whenever it deals any amount of damage- remember 1/1 or 1.0 or 100%- all the same thing, can be considered fractions, really just drop the "fraction phrase" this will let the creature automatically check how much damage is dealt to the player, not blocking creature, and get that many counters, this means that if your opponent blocks with a 2/2, it get 1 coutner, blocks with 1/1, it gets 2 counters, but thats only the first combat- then it starts scaling more and more, making it a very fun card.
As for dealing with X, that is not neccesary, "that much" will suffice here.
